Cats can definitely get overweight pretty quickly if they are just "free fed " (i.e. food is left out around the clock). I have an automatic waterer & feeder for my four cats and they work GREAT! the waterer you can pick-up just about anywhere, but I recommend this feeder -- > amazon.com/ Petmate-Bistro-Electronic-Portion-Control-Automatic/ dp/ B000BVWVUA/ ref= pd_sim_dbs_k_title_3 It's a little pricy, but it has portion control and a timer... and it works very well!! AND you can get the waterer with it for only about $12 more!

There are some good ones at petsmart if there is one near you. You should go look or better yet look at their website.

We have always just left a bowl of dry food out all the time. Cats are not very likely to eat too much, and they like little snacks!

Get one of the feeder where you can use a liter coke bottle to screw into the bowl. ask somone at the store bout it and they'll know what your asking bout. they are easy becuz they dont break.

Is there some reason you can't feed it in the morning before you leave and at night when you go to bed? That's how I do it. But I don't use an automatic feeder, just my hands.
