If you are only going to be gone a little over a week, it is best to have someone check on your cat at least once every 24 to 36 hours. Leaving a cat for a few days at a time with only an automatic feeder and water bottle could cost you more in a future veterinary bill than you will save. Bacteria, viruses and parasites can grow in untended food, water and litter boxes. Also, if your cat should have a fall or develop a urinary tract infection, the cat will need to see a vet within a day. The first 2 links below are for inexpensive feeders and waterers. It is not a good idea to use those unless someone replaces the water and scoops litter once a day. If you can afford it, you would be better off with an automatic feeder that has separate compartments for each day's food. That will keep the food cleaner. Also, a pet fountain would be much better than a water bottle type waterer because the water circulates and has a filter, so the water will be cleaner. A self-cleaning litter box would complete your shopping list. But once you purchase all three, you may be spending more money than a pet sitter would cost. Even with that much equipment, you should still have someone check your cat every day or two. The last link is about the dangers of leaving cats unattended for too long a time.

I wouldn't use those electronic feeders. Since your time is short, my suggestion is to leave out a ton of dry food in a bucket. Leave out at least 2 buckets, perhaps 3, of water. My brother uses those 5 quart ice cream pails. The automatic feeders can fail and your cat would be in trouble quickly. While your cat may pig out, you are not gone long enough for it to become a major health problem. The ones that simply dispense food or water by gravity generally work fine. A feeder like this one is perfectly all right. There is no place for the food to get stuck and it just comes down as the cat eats. Used those for years and no problem. A water one like that is also fine. You don't want anything mechanical - they just plug up and stop working. But I would still have a second water source, just in case. amazon.com/ Our-Pets-Fresh-Food-Tower/ dp/ B000PKK1HC/ ref= sr_1_6?ie= UTF8 &s= home-garden &qid= 1245454909 &sr= 8-6

The least expensive and safe thing to do is........go to any store and buy 2 (12 qt ) dishpans......Fill one of them with dry cat food, and put it on one side of the kitchen......Fill the other with clean water, and put it on THE OTHER SIDE of the kitchen. This will provide enough food and water for one cat for quite a few days....and she won't get the water dirty by having the food too close to it. Your main concern should be.........a couple more litter boxes, or at least one more LARGE one!! I've been using a large plastic container ( 18 gal / 68 ltr ) ....the kind you usually use for storage.....for litter boxes. These will hold a lot of litter and are big enough to not get too dirty too quickly...( 23 1/ 2 " x 18 " x 15 " ). I got mine at Walmart, and today they're on sale for $4. As long as your mom's friend is going to come in and check on her a few times, she can refill the food and refresh the water ( if need be ) and clean the litter box(es), too. That's really nice of her to do this for you and your family....... Hope this helps........ I hope you make it on time to visit for awhile with your Grandfather. Sorry to hear that he's so ill. Good luck, and have a safe trip.......
